MemoWare Help - Document File Formats  

Note that either (.prc) or (.pdb) is NOT the format of the MemoWare document file you download -- they are just filename extensions. These filename extensions (.prc and .pdb) do not tell you what program you need to be able to read the document file on your PDA. Rather, you need to know what format the document file is in -- if you have a document that you're not sure what its format is, check out the FAQs page for instructions on figuring out the document file's format. Once you know what format the document file is in, you can use this page to get the correct reader program for it.

DOC DOC, or Doc, is a generic name for a type of text document format usable by nearly all PDA platforms. Note that this format is not the same as the .doc filename extension usually given to Microsoft Word document files.

DOC readers for Palm OS devices:
    • AportisDoc is a full-featured freeware DOC reader
    • BookWormie
    • CSpotRun is a good freeware reader
    • DeepReader has anti-aliased fonts and "smart" formatting
    • Documents To Go by DataViz (also handles Word & Excel files)
    • eReader (formerly Palm Reader) also handles DOC format
    • Express Reader is a Qvadis' Palm-based DOC reader (free and GT versions)
    • FastWriter handles Word, Text, HTML, RTF and DOC files on PC and Palm
    • HandStory a multi-format app that reads DOC, text and graphics
    • iambic Reader handles DOC files with or without HTML tags
    • iSilo reads both iSilo and DOC documents
    • MobiPocket offers both PalmOS and WinCE/PPC versions
    • PanaRead provides extra large text capabilities
    • QED allows DOC editing right on the Palm

DOC readers for EPOC machines:
    • MobiPocket also offers a DOC publisher program as well. Note that MobiPocket Publisher is not 100% DOC-compliant, so if you use that program to create a DOC file, the resulting DOC file will include some "junk" that will be visible to those PDA users that use a DOC reader other than MobiPocket.
    • VReader5 for Psion Series 5 owners (or download in Finnish)
    • EBook handles DOC files as well as Text and TCR formats and is available in a variety of languages

DOC readers for Pocket PCs:
    • AportisDoc Mobile comes in a PocketPC/WindowsCE flavor as well.
    • MobiPocket also offers a DOC publisher program as well.     • FastWriter handles Word, Text, HTML, RTF and DOC files on PC and Palm

Palm OS, Pocket PC, EPOC
Acrobat Adobe Acrobat, sometimes referred to as PDF, is a PC-based document format that has been ported to PDAs.

Acrobat readers for Palm OS devices:

Acrobat readers for EPOC machines:

Palm OS
BDicty BDicty is a multilanguage dictionary program for PalmOS. It allows the addition of various language and terminology databases. BDicty is available for Palm OS devices only at the Beiks website. Palm OS
CSV Short for "Comma-Separated-Value", CSV files are the lowest common denominator for database files. For Palm users, CSV files are imported into the AddressBook application and show up as a discrete category. Palm OS, Pocket PC, EPOC
DataViewer DataViewer viewing program for Town Compass and Pocket Directory Databases and eBooks from Town Compass. Palm OS, Pocket PC
DateBook DateBook Archive files are imported into the Palm's AddressBook application - see your manual for details on using these files. Palm OS
DB DB is an open-source (although poorly named) database program for Palm OS. You can find information on it here. Palm OS
EPOCWord EPOCWord is the built-in word-processing file format for EPOC devices. See your EPOC device user's manual for more information on using these document files. EPOC
eReader (formerly PalmReader) eReader is a proprietary text document format readable only by the eReader application available from palmdigitalmedia.com. It permits reading of eReader and DOC format files on Palm OS, PocketPC, Windows and Mac platforms. Palm OS, Pocket PC
FireViewer FireViewer (previously named 'ImageViewer' and 'Viewer III') is an impressive graphics format that supports color and a variety of grayscales. Note that color FireViewer images will not be viewable on monochrome (B&W) Palm OS units.

    • TinyViewer works better with some older ImageViewer images
    • HandStory a multi-format app that reads DOC, text and graphics

HanDBase HanDBase is a sophisticated, full-featured database program.

Palm OS, Pocket PC, EPOC
HandStory eBook HandStory eBooks are specially formatted to make for a nice reading experience. To use HandStory eBook (.hsb) files, you must have the HandStory Converter loaded on your PC or Mac, and HandStory Browser on your handheld. Palm OS
HotPaw BASIC HotPaw BASIC (formerly "cBasPad") is a BASIC compiler. Programs for HotPaw BASIC are found here in plain text formats and are copied into the program via the MemoPad application. HotPaw BASIC for Palm OS devices can be found at Ron Nicholson's website. Palm OS
InfoDB InfoDB (aka InfoDB Tools) allows viewing combinations of graphical and text information. You can download the InfoDB Viewer, called InfoView, from HandTop Software. Palm OS
InfoView InfoView permits viewing text information in various organizations (tables, links, etc.). You can download the InfoView application from HandTop Software. Palm OS
iSilo iSilo is a large text format that allows a couple of advantages over the DOC format, such as higher compression rates (which saves your precious RAM) and extended formatting (such as bold, italics, horizontal dividers, and hyperlinks). Check out iSilo's website for more info and to download their reader application. iSilo also reads DOC files, it's very easy to convert text, HTML, and DOC files into the iSilo format, and with iSiloWeb, you can grab content off the web and make iSilo documents automatically. iSilo3 iSilo3 is the 3rd version of the iSilo document format. iSilo3 documents are not compatible with old iSilo readers, so getting the new reader program is necessary. iSilo3 offers many enhancements over previous versions of iSilo. Check out iSilo's website for more info and to download the reader application (currently in beta). iSilo also reads DOC files, it's very easy to convert text, HTML, and DOC files into the iSilo format, and with iSiloX, you can grab content off the web and make iSilo3 documents automatically. JFile JFile is a database format and application.

JFile readers for PalmOS machines:
    • JFile from Land-J Technologies. Note: Version 4.1 and later allows use of all JFile-format databases, whereas earlier versions do not (see the Land-J website for details).

JFile readers for EPOC machines:

Palm OS, EPOC
Jotter Jotter, a simplified database program, is a standard application built into the EPOC release 5 operating system. Users of an EPOC-based machine (Symbian OS release 5 only, not Nokia 9000 series communcators) will have this program built into ROM. Handheld machines that can use this format include the Psion Series 7 and Netbook, Psion Series 5, Psion 5MX, the Ericcsson MC218, the Psion Revo, the Psion Revo Plus, and the Diamond Mako. See your EPOC device user's manual for more information on using these document files. EPOC
Lexica Lexica is a reference viewer and multilingual translator for Palm-powered devices. By using add-in language modules, Lexica allows search and translation between English and French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and more. LIST LIST is a freeware database format and application originally written for PalmOS.

Palm OS, EPOC
LIT LIT files, also known as "Reader" files, are readable only by Pocket PCs and desktop computers running a Microsoft Windows operating system. Pocket PCs have a LIT Reader already included, and should reference their user's manual for more information. Windows desktop users can obtain a LIT Reader from the Microsoft Reader homepage. MathPad MathPad is a tool for solving and storing mathematical equations in standard algebraic syntax. You can find more info on it at Rick Huebner's website. Palm OS
MemoPad MemoPad Archive files are imported into the Palm's MemoPad application - see your Palm manual for details on using these files. Palm OS
MobileDB

MobileDB is a leading database application for the Palm OS and Pocket PC. MobileDB enables users to create complex data lists from Microsoft Excel, Access, FileMaker or a desktop version of MobileDB. MobiPocket MobiPocket is a text document format offering advanced formatting functions. MobiPocket offers readers for a variety of PDA platforms, all available at the MobiPocket website. Palm OS, Pocket PC, EPOC
Pandora Pandora files are self-contained information applets for Palm OS devices. Just install and run from the Applications menu (no reader app is required). Palm OS
Plucker Plucker is an extended text-and-graphics document format for handhelds. It can be used for both local and remote (e.g., Internet) files. More info can be found at the Plucker website. Palm OS
QuickLookup QuickLookup is a reference tool for taking text and database-style content with you. You can download it from TranCreative. Pocket PC
QuickSheet QuickSheet is a powerful spreadsheet application for Palm OS devices. You can download it from Cutting Edge Software. Palm OS
QuickWord QuickSheet is a word-processing and Microsoft Word reader application for Palm OS devices. You can download it from Cutting Edge Software. Palm OS
RichReader RichReader, by Michael Arena, adds extensive formatting capabilities to otherwise plain DOC files. More info and downloads are available at the RichReader webpage. Palm OS
RPN RPN scripts are to be used with the RPN calculator application for Palm OS devices -- visit that homepage for more information on writing and installing scripts and function menus. Palm OS

Text Text files are generic ASCII documents. Most PDAs can use these files without futher conversion. Palm users can use these by copying their contents into the Palm's Memopad application via the Palm (or other) PIM desktop software. Text files are transferred to Pocket PCs through the desktop ActiveSync software. Most of these are less than 4K, but those that are larger are broken up into multiple consecutive memos at the points indicated by dashes. Palm OS, Pocket PC, EPOC

TomeRaider TomeRaider is a powerful text reader application with database-like capabilities, and versions are available for Palm OS, EPOC, and Pocket PC platforms. For more information or to download the TomeRaider reader program, see the TomeRaider homepage. For MacOS-based Palm users, the Mac PalmOS converter is available as an alpha product. Note that TomeRaider files are downloaded as *.tr files -- if these are to be read on a PalmOS device, they need to be converted into a .pdb file using one of the conversion programs available at the TomeRaider website (for more information on using TomeRaider files on Palm OS devices, please see the README file). WordSmith WordSmith is a terrific word-processor for PalmOS devices. It can handle plain text, DOC files, Microsoft Word, and its own proprietary format. For more info, see the Handmark website. Palm OS

NOTICE: Netscape 4.x sometimes renames downloaded document files from their appropriate extensions (usually *.prc or *.pdb) and changes them to *.exe - PLEASE rename the files you download to *.pdb, as there are NO *.exe files in MemoWare's archives. Thanks!
